Description
The project CPES (Channel Payments for Ecosystem Services) develops PES schemes remunerating agricultural practices improving water quality in catchment wide approaches in 6 case studies, one is Lac au Duc. Long term data connect nutrient and climate conditions to cyanobacterial dynamics. The main factor being excess Phosphate, varies with hydrogeological characteristics and agricultural practices. Curative actions were assessed and hydrogen peroxide tested with limited success. Long term amelioration possibilities include e.g. permanent cover or anti-erosive hedges, and the economic factors need to be assessed for both buyers and farmers. This project requires a multi-facetted approach combining expertise of ecology, hydrogeology, agro-economy, moreover of intermediate and farmers’ associations, and non-the-least, the agricultural skills of the farmers!
